Here’s The Best Reason To Own A Home Theater System

For those of you who’ve been here for a while, you know that I’m of the position that home theater is the way of the future because the theater industry is going to price itself out of the market, providing too little return for too much cash.  And now, I have just a little extra ammunition for that belief after seeing an article in USA Today with the headline:

Theater Chains Raising Price of Ticket

See, the theaters have discovered that they can charge just a little extra for the cost of a ticket if they offer something new and interesting along with it, like, say, a presentation in 3-D. Now that’s all fine and well–in fact, from a purely capitalist view, it makes sense.  But the theaters are taking it one step further–they’re trying to find the CEILING.

Lines like this:

At an AMC theater in Danvers, Mass., a Boston suburb, 3-D ticket prices are jumping more than 20% to $17.50 from $14.50, while the adult admission price for a conventional film will remain at $10.50. At one Seattle multiplex, adult admission is rising to $11 from $10 for a conventional film, to $15 from $13.50 for a regular 3-D showing and to $17 from $15 for Imax 3-D.

prove that theaters want to find the point where you will stop paying, and then charge just a quarter or so less.  This is a move that could prove fatal to an already limping theater market–if people start to get the idea that the theaters looking to gouge patrons, they’ll exercise their options. And they have several–seeing only 2-D theatrical entries, or eschewing the theater entirely.

And with components getting better and costing less with each passing day, the likelihood of theater backlash grows.  That puts folks like US ahead of the curve.

Entry Level Logitech Harmony 300i Universal Remote

Logitech is introducing another universal remote control in the form of the Harmony 300i and similar to Valet Router announced by Cisco earlier today, the focus of the Harmony remote is in its simplicity.

In a recent study performed by Logitech, more then 75 million homes located within the US and Europe have tried a universal remote control at one point or another and of those, 1 in 3 have found the experience unsatisfactory. The main complaints were setup and ease of use.

The Harmony 300i aims to address the setup issue by using an online website for the setup of the universal remote. Through a step by step process, the consumer will be guided through the process and navigational menus will allow the user to select between 225,000 devices listed amongst 5000 different brands.

Once fully customized, the Harmony 300i is capable of replacing up to four remote controls. Expect to see the new device show up in shops in April with a retail price set at £29.99 in the UK or $49.99 in the US.

Netflix introduces 5.1 surround sound

Netflix is preparing itself to roll out a big upgrade in the coming year, where it will include 5.1 surround sound streaming for an even more realistic movie watching experience, complete with close captioning. While there are no further details furnished to the masses, including the availability date as well as the kind of titles that support 5.1 surround sound, it is nice to see Netflix making progress in terms of technology. So far, there is no mention on a price increase for the upgrade, so hopefully everything will remain the same in these economically trying times.

Dairy Cows Get To Stare At LCD TVs All Day

While many folks out there have a dream to just be able to kick back and watch TV all day long, it seems that some dairy cows owned by a Russian dairy farmer are already living the life of your dreams. That’s because the farmer decided to install 40-inch LCD TVs in the barn, constantly showing a video of a nice peaceful nature scene. The farmer is probably trying to see if TV-watching cows produce more (and better) milk compared to normal bored cows, eh? Those LCD TVs seem to be mounted awfully high (for the cows), though.

Bose Lifestyle V20 Home Theater System Review–Not The Best Value

Once again I’m amazed by the sheer impossibility that is Bose home theater gear.  From its impossibly tiny overall size to its impossibly high level of quality–not to mention the impossibly high price–Bose home theater gear never fails to astonish.  And today’s review target, the Bose Lifestyle V20, carries on that proud tradition.  But this one may not be the one you want to get–read on.

The Bose Lifestyle V20 is a 5.1 channel home theater system with built-in surround sound decoders, AM / FM tuner, four DirectReflecting cube speakers, a center channel speaker and the heart of any good Bose system, the Bose Acoustimass module.  It also offers two HDMI inputs, S-Video inputs, component video inputs and outputs, and the ability to transform any DVD player into an upconverting one by routing it through the unit.

I expressed some doubt before that this was the Bose system for you, and here’s why.  One, you don’t get a DVD player with this one, but rather you have to hook one to it.  This by itself isn’t all that bad, and the fact that it’s a five channel system as opposed to a seven channel can also be overlooked as the sound output coming out of this thing is just patently incredible.  But here’s the rub–you’ll have to shell out fully two grand for this system, and despite the incredible performance, value suffers due to that huge price tag.

You won’t be disappointed if you do shell out for the Bose Lifestyle V20, but know this: there are probably better values out there if you keep your eyes open.
