Cheap surround sound speaker stands

By admin · Friday, March 12th, 2010

Having a cheap surround sound system is great, but unfortunately it is only half the battle. To truly enjoy your new home theatre, you need to have your speakers correctly placed. Depending on exactly what kind of speakers you have, you may need some speaker stands to get everything in the right place.

This is especially true for your surround sound speakers. These are designed to be placed in a specific position. In a 5.1 surround sound system, your rear speakers need to be to the side, just behind you, at ear level. Most of the time you will only be able to achieve this positioning by using speaker stands. If you have a 7.1 channel system, then you have four speakers that need to be placed around your seating area.

If you are feeling rich (or lazy), then there is a wide range of surround sound speaker stands available from amazon.com, for example these Atlantic Satellite Speaker Stands. I haven’t used these myself, but they seem to get  a great rating, and at just under $30 they won’t break the band either.

For those of you with a bit more of a DIY mindset, here a few guides to check out:

Cinder block speaker stands

If you are going for the industrial look, then these cinder block speaker stands should be perfect. They are nice and heavy, so you won’t have to worry about them falling over. As an added bonus, you can use the cinder blocks as storage shelves for your CDs or DVDs as well. I actually think these look pretty cool. You could always dress them up with a custom paint job if you were so inclined as well.

Repurposed floor lamp stands

If you are looking for something a touch classier than cinder blocks, then repurposing some floor lamps might be the way to go. These repurposed floor lamp stands created by Chris Metcalf look fantastic, and don’t look too hard to knock up in an afternoon. The tools required are pretty basic and it doesn’t look like you need any advanced skills.

DIY Speaker wall mounts

Sometimes you are better off mounting your speakers on the walls rather than using speaker stands. This has a few advantages – you can keep all the wires out of the way and you have less chance accidentally knocking them over. This is what I have done in my home theatre. My rear surrounds are mounted on the walls. I was lucky enough that my room is the right size and shape to do this. If you have a room where there are walls on either side of your viewing area, then I would definitely go for wall mounting your speakers. You can pay a wad of cash to buy wall mounts for your speaker brand, or try to DIY it.

These DIY speaker mounts are very easy on the wallet and look good to boot.
